Monday night gets a makeover

As if Monday night wasn’t sexy enough! As of Saturday, September 10, Mercury Lounge Underground (once known as Bar 56) will now be Overkill: a dissolute lounge for the mildly curious. I went to the opening last night and had the time of my life. There was booty bouncing music, burlesque dancers up on the bar, and drag kings serving grilled cheese, pogos, and chocolate salty balls! They’re having opening parties every Saturday this month so get your butt down there (and RSVP on facebook).

If you’re worried that jazz night will be different, don’t, because François and I will still be there every Monday night from 10pm – midnight getting our jazz on. Heck, I’ll probably be there all evening too watching the cult movies they’ll be screening from 4pm – 9pm. I might never leave!

Anyway, I know you’re going to love it. I’ll let Overkill producer Guy Bérubé explain the rest. See you Monday!

’Overkill’, a dissolute lounge for the mildly curious, is the latest addition to Ottawa’s night life, produced by Sara Ainslie (Mercury Lounge & Collection). Figuratively & literally under ground at 56 Byward Market Square, the club is a venue for live music, spoken word, performance art and multimedia installations. As pioneers in alternative programming, we deliver diversions for the bold and the curious.

Conceptualized by Guy Bérubé (La Petite Mort Gallery), ‘Overkill’ is evocative of the plush playgrounds of the modern era, where Jackie O meets Hugh Hefner. Exhibitionists & Voyeurs are invited to mingle with guest performers and sample vintage mixology in a safe haven featuring black vinyl metal-studded banquettes, Studio 54 mirrored tabletops and Italian 70’s lighting.

is an intelligent and radical inquiry into a fresh perspective on today’s nitelife.

We tend toward dissent, provocation, revolt and secession from the mainstream, the casual and the banal. Our inspiration is drawn from the aesthetics, politics and ideas manifest in the scene from the ‘70s. & ’80’s.

“Where all the fags and the dykes they’re boogyin’ together
The leather freaks are dressed in all kinds of leather
The greatest of the sadists and the masochists too
Screaming “Please hit me, and I’ll hit you”

The FBI are dancing with the junkies
All the straights, are swinging with the funkies
Across the floor and up the wall
We’re freakin at the freakers ball
Yall, we’re freakin at the freakers ball”
