upcoming ottawa events! tonight: dave cooper’s eddy table, tomorrow: jazz on the lake

Tonight: dave cooper’s Eddy Table and Other Misbehavers

An exhibition of drawings from gobs of looming blockbusters!

With a number of animated projects in the works, the timing is ripe for an Animation Festival-affiliated exhibition of drawings and prints that celebrate the imagination of Dave Cooper! This year Dave’s Nickelodeon short, PIGGOATBANANAMANTIS is in competition at the Ottawa International Animation Festival, his other kid’s tv project, The Bagel and Becky Show is being developed full throttle. And of course Dave’s strangest longtime protagonist Eddy Table is returning after a long hiatus to appear in an epic, CGI, Norwegian-funded short film and accompanying graphic novella. Music for the evening will be provided by Renée Yoxon, François Gravel, and Matt Ouimet.

Thursday, September 19th, 7 – 10pm
La Petite Mort Gallery, 306 Cumberland Street, Ottawa

check out my new and improved events calendar!

events1In the few days I’ve been back, I’ve been working tirelessly into the night to get a new and improved events calendar ready to be published, and it’s finally here! Here are some features of the new calendar:

  • The default view is calendar view as seen above, but you can change to list view or map view by clicking the “view as” button in the top right corner.
  • When you mouse over an event in calendar view, you can see a floating description box containing the event title, date/time, image, and blurb.
  • Events are now searchable. If you click the arrow to the right of the “find events” bar, a drop down menu allows you to search for events by date, location, or title.
  • Events now have their own unique page. If you click on an event title you will be taken to an event page like this one. On this page you will find a full description of the event, related photo, cover (in the top right corner), information about the venue, organizer, accessibility, seating and parking, as well as links to download the event to your google calendar or ical. In addition I have tagged the events with useful information like “date spot”, “fun for families”, “drinks”, etc.

I’m very excited about the changes happening around the blog. Let me know what you think of the new and improved events calendar in the comments. Are there any features you would like to see added?

Jazz + Poetry, March 30 in Ottawa

jazz+poetry, March 30, Ottawa

Poets and jazz musicians have been collaborating and drawing inspirations from each other for many years. That’s why I’m so exciting to be putting on a show with Brandon Wint, a nationally recognized spoken word artist.

Brandon and I have been friends for many years. In a lot of ways our development as artists has shared a similar track. This is the first time we are sharing a bill together and I’m really happy it’s finally happening. Click the video below to check out one of his poems:

Both Brandon, and Mark Ferguson and I will be unveiling new work, so this is definitely not a show to be missed.

Pictures from Jane Harbury presents Discoveries at Hugh’s Room

Last Tuesday I had the great privilege of playing at Hugh’s Room as part of the Discoveries Series put on by Jane Harbury. This series is in it’s ninth year and shows no sign of slowing down. We had a packed house and everyone played their best.

I kicked off the night with six tunes from my latest release, Here We Go Again. I was joined onstage by three Toronto musicians, Joel Visentin on piano, Phil Albert on bass, and Jeff Halischuk on drums. I met Joel and Phil at Banff last May and although Jeff was recommended to me for this performance, we learned later that we shared the bandstand before back in 2009. Small world, isn’t it?

The other performers that evening included Tom Taylor, The Schotts, and Jessica Chase. Tom Taylor is a folky singer/songwriter and guitar player from Vancouver who flew all the way to Toronto just for the event. I had a really nice time getting to know Tom and learning all about his music, his family, and his adventures on tour. Darrin and Alison Schott are a lovely bluegrass couple who just released their first album after 25 years of music-making. I really enjoyed how light-hearted and warm their set was. Jessica Chase is a 19 year-old pop singer/songwriter with a big sound and a clear love of performing.

We all had a really great time playing at Hugh’s Room. The audience was super warm and the reactions were very positive. I can’t wait to come back to Toronto in March for Canadian Music Week! Hopefully this won’t happen again.
