Jazz + Poetry, March 30 in Ottawa

jazz+poetry, March 30, Ottawa

Poets and jazz musicians have been collaborating and drawing inspirations from each other for many years. That’s why I’m so exciting to be putting on a show with Brandon Wint, a nationally recognized spoken word artist.

Brandon and I have been friends for many years. In a lot of ways our development as artists has shared a similar track. This is the first time we are sharing a bill together and I’m really happy it’s finally happening. Click the video below to check out one of his poems:

Both Brandon, and Mark Ferguson and I will be unveiling new work, so this is definitely not a show to be missed.

Pictures from Jane Harbury presents Discoveries at Hugh’s Room

Last Tuesday I had the great privilege of playing at Hugh’s Room as part of the Discoveries Series put on by Jane Harbury. This series is in it’s ninth year and shows no sign of slowing down. We had a packed house and everyone played their best.

I kicked off the night with six tunes from my latest release, Here We Go Again. I was joined onstage by three Toronto musicians, Joel Visentin on piano, Phil Albert on bass, and Jeff Halischuk on drums. I met Joel and Phil at Banff last May and although Jeff was recommended to me for this performance, we learned later that we shared the bandstand before back in 2009. Small world, isn’t it?

The other performers that evening included Tom Taylor, The Schotts, and Jessica Chase. Tom Taylor is a folky singer/songwriter and guitar player from Vancouver who flew all the way to Toronto just for the event. I had a really nice time getting to know Tom and learning all about his music, his family, and his adventures on tour. Darrin and Alison Schott are a lovely bluegrass couple who just released their first album after 25 years of music-making. I really enjoyed how light-hearted and warm their set was. Jessica Chase is a 19 year-old pop singer/songwriter with a big sound and a clear love of performing.

We all had a really great time playing at Hugh’s Room. The audience was super warm and the reactions were very positive. I can’t wait to come back to Toronto in March for Canadian Music Week! Hopefully this won’t happen again.

I know it’s going to be a wonderful evening of music and I’m really looking forward to seeing my Toronto friends and fans. Here are all the show details:

See you then!

Welcome a new house band to the Saturday Afternoon Jazz Jam at Pressed

2013winter_pressedposter_web

The Saturday Afternoon Jazz Jam at Pressed is starting into it’s 9th month of existence, and after 8 months of running it with Craig Pedersen and David Pontello as the house band, it’s time to pass the torch! Starting this Saturday, Karen Rauh and company will be hosting the jam. Karen has been a part of the house band a few times in the past but now she’s taking it over for the next little while. Hooray! Let’s all wish Karen, Adrian, Mark and Allyson a warm welcome.

If you are an Ottawa-based jazz musician (or are visiting from out of town) please check out the jam this Saturday from 2pm to 5pm. Pressed is at 750 Gladstone Avenue and the cover is a sliding scale of $5 to $15. It’s open to players at every level so don’t be shy if it’s your first time!

If you’re still in doubt, just look at how much fun we’ve had at past jams:
