What trans people are saying...

Portrait of Lilith

"Renée's energy and enthusiasm are infectious and they really foster a positive, safe and caring environment. The vocal exercises they taught and their knowledge on all things vocal exploration were exemplary and I would be more than happy to recommend anyone - regardless of where they place themselves on the gender spectrum and beyond - to participate in your workshops in future.”

Lilith Ferreyra-Carroll, age 36 (she/her)

Portrait of Julien

"I always leave Renée's classes having learned more about my voice and more about myself. Renée's openness and adaptability to accessibility needs make for a warm and welcoming learning environment. As a trans man, they have also been very helpful in helping me explore different aspects of my voice, which has been very gender-affirming. To me, they have been an excellent vocal coach and life coach. Honestly a two for one deal!"

Mathieu, age 25 (he/him)

Portait of Josie

“I took private lessons with Renée for six months and it was one of my best transition decisions. I have tried for years to understand gender-affirming voice lessons from YouTube videos, and workshops, but all of them were beyond the scope of my understanding. Lessons with Renée helped me to understand how the wonderful vocal instrument works. With exercise and taking small steps along the way, I'm now confident I can climb this mountain and succeed."

"Renée is a powerhouse creator and educator clearing the path for trans and disabled folks around the world. Their talent combined with their intense passion for others makes them a stellar educator.  They’re a queer, non-binary, disabled voice teacher and musician who’s been taking the internet by storm by working to bring accessible gender-affirming vocal therapy to all."

- Val J., Scarleteen

"As a trans person who is more attuned toward the convolutions and contradictions of transitioning, Yoxon’s philosophy around voice feminization differs from the typical speech pathologist. 'Passing was never my goal with voice training,' they say. 'There are so many things the voice can do, it’s exciting! What I’m trying to do is have my clients experience gender euphoria with their voice. I’m trying to help people find a voice that they feel represents them. That voice may pass or it may not; passing is so context-specific.'"

- Nour Abi Nakhoul, Xtra*

Montreal-based singer-songwriter and educator Renée Yoxon has released four full-length albums while also building a career as a highly respected trans voice teacher. Their latest album, 2020’s Beautiful Alchemy, is the soundtrack to a documentary directed by Teagan Lance that paints a portrait of Yoxon’s struggles and triumphs with identity, disability and artistic ambition. It’s a crossover jazz album with lovely songwriting, emotional depth and broad musical appeal, with Yoxon’s crystal clear and expressive voice filling their songs with life and personality.

- Adam Feibel, Jazz.FM91

Yoxon is proudly queer, non-binary, disabled, and trans. Priorities are trans and non-binary joy, accessibility, and centering BIPOC experiences. As an educator, they focus on making the experience of singing accessible. This focus is as apparent in the beauty of the songscape of their music making. The artistry is in the collective musical inclusiveness.

Things I've created

(that I'm super proud of)

Music Video // Terrible Alchemy

This song was the first single from my fourth album! I collaborated with an amazing queer and trans crew to make this amazing projection music video. This song is about my relationship to my body in chronic pain.

Screendance // Rollation

This video was created as a final project for a class on screendance that I took during my songwriting master's degree in Ireland. This screendance documents my relationship to my rollator and how it is an extension of my disabled body.

Beautiful Alchemy // Documentary by Teagan Lance

From director Teagan Lance: Beautiful Alchemy is a portrait of Renée Yoxon, a queer, non-binary, and disabled singer songwriter. The film explores their struggles and triumphs with identity, disability, and their artistic ambitions. This is done through music, performance, day in the life moments, interviews, and lyrical montage. This was all designed with input from Renée on their proper representation of their story. Watch here.

Vlog // Montreal Trans Pride

This is simply a fun and colourful vlog from the first time I was able to attend trans pride in Montreal! I was very nervous because I had been too disabled to attend in the past, but this year the organizers provided wheelchairs to anyone who needed them and I was so grateful!

EPK // Here We Go Again

In 2012, I released my second album, Here We Go Again with Mark Ferguson. This beautiful EPK documents the album release concert in Ottawa, along with some studio moments while we were recording it.

This is my favourite cover! Matt Schultz and I worked together all throughout our time at McGill (and beyond!) and I will never forget how magical this collaboration felt.
