Voice practice is more than a technical problem

Voice practice usually gets framed as a technical problem. Adjust your pitch, shift your resonance, move your inflection, done.

But voice is personal, progress rarely happens in a straight line, and nobody prepares you for the days it isn't working.

When Jessica Kingsley Publishers approached me about writing a book, I was clear that I did not want to write the book form of one of my courses. I wanted to make something new: a resource that works for my students and for anyone else on a trans voice journey, whether you're studying with a teacher, taking a group class, or figuring it out on your own.

I wrote this book to sit beside you through all of it.

Three books in one

Part guide

Everything I usually spend the first month of lessons on, from vocal health to the emotional side nobody warns you about.

Part workbook

Prompts, exercises, and space to work out what you actually want your voice to sound like.

Part practice log

40 pages of fillable logs, plus monthly and seasonal check-ins to track where you've been.

The first half sets you up

Emotional sustainability and self-care

How to stay in a practice you can actually keep, and what to do when your inner critic won't shut the heck up.

Vocal health

Hydration, HRT, binding, surgery, posture, food, and how disability and neurodivergence change what practice reasonably looks like for you.

Practice that fits your life

Four different strategies for building the habit, because the one that works beautifully for your friend might do absolutely nothing for you.

Voice and gender perception

What gender actually sounds like, the problem with "passing", and why I can't tell you whether you sound like a woman.

Mapping your voice

A voice audit, a sound journal, a gender word cloud, and exercises for translating your gender into sound.

The foundations

Pitch, resonance, vocal weight, and inflection, with exploration exercises and space for your own notes on each.

The second half belongs to you

Your voice toolkit

Collect your own warm-ups, cool-downs, favourite exercises, practice phrases, and games in one place, so you stop losing them.

An emergency toolkit

For the days when nothing is working and you need a plan you made earlier.

Progress reviews

Monthly and seasonal check-ins, plus the Trans Voice Emotions Evaluator, which I wrote for anyone who finds recording themself too painful right now.

40 pages of practice logs

Fillable, flexible, and yours.

It works alongside whatever you're already doing

Taking one of my courses?

Use it as your practice log and your notebook.

Studying with a teacher or an SLP?

Bring it to lessons and fill it between them.

In a group class?

Keep your own record of what's working for you.

Self-directing with YouTube?

Track which videos work best for your practice.

There's no prerequisite and no right order. Skip around, come back to prompts as your practice changes, and ignore anything that isn't serving you today.

Come flip through it with me

Tea and I made a short video about what's inside.

Please wreck this book

Designed to be dog-eared, scribbled in, highlighted, and made totally your own, this book will be the home you didn't know you needed for your trans voice practice.

As I say in the introduction: if it looks like a piñata by the time you're done with it, I support that.

Renée Yoxon, gender-affirming voice teacher

Hi, I'm Renée

I'm a gender-affirming voice teacher based in Montreal. I've been teaching voice since 2008 and specializing in trans voice since 2019, and my free YouTube tutorials have been watched more than a million times.

I teach a non-medical route to voice change, for people who want something private, self-paced, and doable between childcare and night shifts. I believe there is no right way to sound like a man, a woman, or a nonbinary person, that there are as many ways to sound feminine as there are women, and that you deserve to love your voice.
