How to Shout! in a feminine way

Hello! 🌈 Today, we're looking at something a bit louder than our usual chat – quite literally! We're tackling the art of shouting... but make it feminine. Picture this: You're at a concert, or maybe you're trying to catch your friend's attention across a busy street. How do you shout without losing that gorgeous femininity in your voice that you've worked so hard to cultivate? Let's unravel this mystery together!

Understanding the Feminine Shout

The Challenge Presented

I was on TikTok Live the other day, and a commenter mentioned she was struggling to shout in a way that felt authentically feminine. Her shout came out airy, and they were left feeling a bit disconnected from the voice they've been nurturing. Sound familiar? You're not alone. Many folks in the transfeminine voice community face this peculiar hurdle.

The Technicalities of Volume and Femininity

Volume vs. Femininity: The Balancing Act

Let's get a bit geeky for a moment, shall we? When we talk about volume, we're essentially discussing how loud we can make our voices, which boils down to something called subglottal pressure. Fancy, right? But here's the kicker: increasing volume usually means your vocal folds are doing a different dance than what they do at your comfy speaking level. This can mess with the feminine qualities you've been honing.

Aryepiglottic Who Now?

Enter the aryepiglottic sphincter – no, it's not a character from a sci-fi novel, though it sounds like one. It's a part of your throat that can help you maintain a bright, feminine quality to your shouts. Think of it as adding a bit of twang (yes, like a country singer) to your voice to keep it sounding light and feminine, even when you're belting out to reach someone's ears across that busy street.

Exercises and Practices

Now, how do we actually work on this? Here are a couple of exercises to try:

1. The Nerd Sound:

Start by making a nerdy "EH" sound. Really lean into it. This engages that sphincter muscle and helps you get familiar with the sensation.

2. Volume Play:

Practice gradually increasing your volume from a whisper to a shout, focusing on maintaining the "EH" twang. It'll feel weird, but trust me, it works.

Bridging the Gap: From Speaking to Shouting

The key here is practice, practice, and more practice. Shifting from speaking to shouting while keeping your voice recognizably feminine might seem daunting, but it's absolutely within your reach. Remember, transforming your voice is a journey – there are ups, downs, and a whole lot of exploration.
