How to turn EXCUSES into ANSWERS

turn excuses into answers

Hey there, I’m Renée, and as a gender-affirming voice teacher, I've had the privilege of guiding numerous individuals on their transformative journey to discovering a voice that gives them gender euphoria. Today, I want to delve into a crucial aspect of this process: accountability in trans voice work.

So, let's talk about holding yourself accountable without succumbing to the pitfalls of self-blame and excuses. It's about reframing how we perceive our practice setbacks and tackling the hurdles that inevitably arise with creativity and resilience.

Reframing "Excuses" into Answers

Imagine this scenario: You diligently set reminders for your practice sessions, just like how you organize dentist appointments or social outings with friends. It seems foolproof, right? Yet, despite your best efforts, you find yourself missing sessions and experiencing a sense of frustration.

Here’s the critical shift in perspective: When you admit that you couldn’t practice because you forgot to check your calendar, it’s not merely an excuse; it's a reason. You're not failing; you're gaining valuable insights into what methods work best for you and what doesn't quite resonate.

You Are Not the Problem

It's so important to internalize this fundamental truth: you are not the problem. If the prospect of practicing every day feels overwhelming, it's perfectly acceptable to adapt your approach. Perhaps setting alarms or leaving voice memos for yourself is a more effective strategy. Or maybe, traditional vocal exercises feel monotonous, whereas engaging in practice games ignites your enthusiasm.

It's essential to recognize that there's no one-size-fits-all solution. Your journey is uniquely yours, and finding what resonates with you is key to making meaningful progress.

Blame the Process, Not Yourself

If your current practice routine isn’t yielding the desired results, it's not indicative of your dedication or worth. Instead of directing blame inward, take a moment to evaluate the process objectively. What aspects are working well? Where are the bottlenecks occurring? Be open to pivoting and experimenting with new strategies until you find the approach that clicks.

So, the next time you fall short of your practice goals, resist the temptation to berate yourself. View setbacks as valuable learning experiences, paving the way for growth and refinement.

Embracing the Journey

Finding consistency in trans voice practice isn’t solely about reaching the end goal; it's about embracing the entire journey. Every step you take, every obstacle you overcome, contributes to your personal evolution. Celebrate your victories—no matter how small—and glean wisdom from your challenges.

Nurturing Your Voice

Your voice is a powerful instrument, capable of conveying your truth and asserting your identity. Nurturing it requires patience, compassion, and unwavering dedication. As you continue on your trans voice journey, remember to prioritize self-care and kindness towards yourself.

Conclusion: Empowerment through Practice

I hope this perspective shift empowers you in your trans voice journey. Remember, progress is not linear, and setbacks are a natural part of the process. If you’re seeking additional guidance and resources, sign up for my newsletter for more insights into trans voice practice.

And for those curious about the practice games I mentioned, I've compiled a free book filled with engaging exercises designed to make your practice sessions both enjoyable and effective.

Keep showing up, keep exploring, and above all, keep believing in the power of your voice. Your journey is valid, and with perseverance and resilience, you'll unlock its boundless potential.

Until next time, take care, and keep practicing!
