How to Finally Feel Vocal Resonance (Using a Nose Flute)

If you've been studying trans voice training for a while, you've probably heard the word resonance more times than you can count. You've read about it, watched videos about it, maybe even tried exercises for it, and still felt like something wasn't quite clicking.

That's exactly what this post (and the video below) is about. We're going to use one of the world's silliest instruments—a nose flute!—to help you finally feel vocal resonance in your own body, not just understand it as a concept. And the best part is you don't even need to own a nose flute to do it.

Watch the Full Video

Prefer to read? Keep scrolling for the full breakdown of what the nose flute can teach you about vocal resonance and a step-by-step exercise you can try right now.

What Is a Nose Flute?

A nose flute (also called a nose whistle or a humanatone) is a small wind instrument you play with your nose and your mouth. You blow out through your nose into a little cup, which funnels the air over a sharp edge called a fipple, creating a vibration. That vibration then excites the air inside your mouth and produces a sound.

Unlike a recorder or an ocarina, the nose flute has no buttons, no holes, nothing to cover or uncover. The only thing that changes the pitch is the shape of your mouth and the position of your tongue.

  • Mouth open, tongue pulled back → lower note
  • Mouth smaller, tongue forward → higher note

That's it. That's the whole instrument. Want to see me playing it? Watch the first few seconds of the video above.

Helmholtz Resonance: The Physics Behind the Silliness

The behaviour you just read about, where a cavity of air resonates at a frequency determined by its size and the size of its opening, has a name: Helmholtz resonance.

You've heard it before. It's what happens when you blow over the top of an empty bottle and get that deep, hollow hoot. Bigger cavity, lower pitch. Smaller cavity, higher pitch. The nose flute works on exactly the same principle. And so does whistling!

This is worth knowing because it's not magic or mystery, it's physics. And that means it's something you can learn to feel and control.

What This Has to Do With Your Voice

Your vocal tract (everything above your vocal folds, including your throat, mouth, and nose) is also a cavity of air. And just like the nose flute, the shape of that cavity changes the sound that comes out of it.

The voice works a little differently from the nose flute, though. With the nose flute, changing the cavity shape directly changes the pitch. But in your speaking voice, your vocal folds are already producing a pitch independently. So when you change the shape of your vocal tract, the pitch doesn't move. Instead, the colour of the sound changes.

  • Bigger space → darker, lower-resonance sound
  • Smaller space → brighter, higher-resonance sound

That colour is what we call resonance or "vocal space," if you prefer. And the tongue movement that changes pitch on a nose flute is one of the same movements that changes resonance in your speaking voice.

Which means we can use whistling to feel that movement before we bring it into speech.

The Whistling Exercise: Feel Resonance Right Now

As I mentioned, whistling works on exactly the same Helmholtz resonance principle as the nose flute. Your mouth is the resonance chamber, your tongue controls the size of that chamber, and there's no larynx involved. That's what makes it such a useful entry point for understanding vocal resonance in trans voice work.

Here's what to do:

Step 1: Whistle a Low Note

Whistle a low, comfortable note. Don't strain for the absolute lowest, just something easy and relaxed. Hold it for a few seconds and notice where your tongue is. It's probably pulled back in your mouth, with more open space between your tongue and the roof of your mouth.

Step 2: Whistle a High Note

Now whistle a higher note. Notice how your tongue moves forward? The space in your mouth gets smaller. That's Helmholtz resonance doing its thing.

Go back and forth a few times (low, high, low, high) and just feel that tongue movement. Don't worry about perfectly clean whistling sounds. If you can hear any pitch change at all, you're doing it right.

Step 3: Bring It Into Your Speaking Voice

Now open a tuner app and say "ahh" on any comfortable note. Find it on the tuner. Got it? Good.

Now, without changing your pitch, try moving your tongue into that low-whistle position (tongue back, more space). Then shift to the high-whistle position (tongue forward, less space).

Your pitch on the tuner should stay roughly the same. But something is changing, isn't it? That darker quality when your tongue is back. That brighter quality when your tongue is forward. That's resonance. That's what we've been talking about this whole time. And now you've felt it!

Can't Whistle? Try This Instead

No worries at all! Here's an alternative that works just as well.

Make an unvoiced "h" sound as if you were starting to say "he." It should sound a bit like TV static. Now move between "who" and "he" shapes with your mouth, and listen to how the sound changes. You should be able to hear how the mouth shape affects the quality of that static—darker for "who," brighter for "he."

It's the same principle, just without the whistling mechanic. From there, follow the same steps above to bring that tongue movement into your speaking voice.

Why This Helps If the Key-Oh Exercise Hasn't Worked for You

The Key-Oh exercise is one of the most widely used exercises by my students in voice feminization training and voice masculinization training, but for some people, consciously moving the larynx feels impossible. If that's been your experience, you're not alone, and this nose flute approach might be your way in.

Because this nose flute and whistling exercise is driven primarily by tongue position and mouth shape, you don't have to consciously manipulate your larynx at all. The larynx will naturally follow along to some degree as you shift your tongue, but you're not leading with it. Let the tongue lead first, and let the rest follow.

Think of it as finding a side door into resonance when the front door hasn't been opening for you.

For more on the Key-Oh exercise itself, check out this blog post and try it out!

Next Steps for Your Voice Practice

Here's a quick recap of what we covered:

  • The nose flute demonstrates Helmholtz resonance: a larger mouth cavity produces a lower pitch, while a smaller one produces a higher pitch.
  • Whistling works the same way, and so does your voice, except that in speech, the pitch is held steady by your vocal folds, so what changes is the colour of the sound, not the note itself.
  • Moving your tongue between the "low whistle" and "high whistle" positions in your speaking voice changes your resonance, making it darker or brighter without shifting your pitch.
  • Because this exercise doesn't require conscious larynx movement, it can be a genuinely useful entry point if other resonance exercises haven't felt accessible in your body.

If this was your first time actually feeling resonance rather than just reading about it, I'd love to hear about it in the comments of the video above. Did the nose flute do its job?

And if you want to build this felt sense into a structured practice, the videos in my resonance playlist are a great place to start. They'll give you the tools to turn this moment of awareness into something consistent and reliable in your voice.
