Where do I even start?

So you've come out as trans, you've changed your name, you've changed your hair, you've changed your clothes, and now you want to start working on your voice. A question I get asked as a trans voice teacher all the time is "Where do I even start?"

I made an entire online course on voice alteration called Trans Vocal Exploration. In this blog post and in the video above I want to give you a little peak into the very first module I have everybody do: it's called "Developing Awareness". Developing awareness is all about deepening your ability to hear nuance in vocal sounds, both from what you hear in everyday life and from what you're already capable of producing.

The first exercise in the module is called "Performing a Voice Audit". It's about looking through yourself and figuring out how you already use your voice. The second exercise, called "Keeping a Sound Journal", is about cataloguing different sounds that you discover in your own voice along your journey. The final two exercises are called "How to figure out what your target voice is" and "Inspiration". These are both exercises that will help you hone in on what your goals are.

I find that if students dig into these exercises before they start, the work is a lot easier. Another reason I love beginning with developing awareness is that often students are surprised by how many skills they already have to alter their own voice!

In every one of my courses we start with a similar exploration phase. If you want to dig deeper into this work you can discover the course that best suits your journey here!
