This week, I joined Alexa on Singing Teachers Talk, the podcast from BAST Training, for an episode called "Exploring Gender-Affirming Voice and Vocal Identity." It's a podcast for voice teachers, so we got to nerd out about the stuff I love most: how voice, gender, and identity fit together, and what that means for the people teaching in the studio.
Whether you already work with trans and nonbinary singers or you're just starting to wonder how to make your studio a safer place for them, I think you'll get a lot out of it. Alexa even opened the episode by reviewing my book, which was such a treat!

Starting With the Book (0:00)
Alexa kicked things off with a review of my first book, The Trans Voice Practice Journal: Explore, Track, and Claim Your Gender-Affirming Voice, and I'm still a little giddy about it lol.
Alexa noticed so many of the things I worked hard on: the bright blues, yellows, and reds, fonts that called to mind Keri Smith's Wreck This Journal (permission to be messy and creative!), and the fact that the very first page after the title points readers to four other books. Alexa called that flying the flag for the community, which is exactly what I was going for.
Alexa also said that a lot of it, like turning criticism into curiosity, the vocal health material, and the practice routine work, could help any singer, even though the book focuses on the speaking voice.
It comes out November 19, 2026, and you can get 20% off from Jessica Kingsley Publishers with the code VOICE20.

From Physics to Gender-Affirming Voice Work (6:33)
Alexa asked how I got here. I loved math and science, so I did a physics degree, with jazz performance as a side gig and a much-loved hobby. When I graduated, I chose music. I went on to do a Bachelor of Music in jazz performance at McGill, and then a master's in songwriting at the University of Limerick.
Gender-affirming voice work turns out to be a mix of all three, because it's both a science and an art. My science background means I can read the research papers on voice science (and enjoy them, because I'm a huge voice nerd).
What Is Gender-Affirming Voice Work? (9:00)
It goes by lots of names: identity-affirming voice work, trans voice training, voice feminization or masculinization, and in French, l'harmonisation de la voix. Whatever you call it, it means creating a speaking or singing voice that lines up with how someone presents their gender. I mostly work with the speaking voice.
People come to it for a few reasons. Some have voice dysphoria, where hearing their own voice causes distress. Some are misgendered in everyday life because of their voice. For a lot of people, it's a mix of both.
Pitch is only one piece of how a voice gets gendered. Resonance (how dark or bright your voice sounds), vocal weight, and the contour of your sentences all play a part, and what reads as feminine or masculine depends on culture. In North American English, for example, research has found that cis women tend to use a wider pitch contour when they speak than cis men. In Germany, it's the other way around. That's why one module in my courses helps students define femininity and masculinity as they're expressed in their own environment.
Why It Matters to Play With Gender Expression (12:28)
Gender expression isn't important for everyone, but playing with it can help you learn who you are and how you like to show up. We change our hair, makeup, and style all the time. It only becomes "gender expression" when it crosses the norms of gender, and your voice is part of that same expression.
Exploring it can make people more grounded and more empathetic. (It's also why I'm not a fan of the word "authentic"—people keep changing!) Alexa connected this to singers expanding their colour palette, and I loved that. The shape, colour, and volume of your voice become choices you can draw on whenever you want them.
From Speaking Voice to Singing Voice (16:07)
My speaking voice work grew out of my singing training: modifying pitch and colour, expanding range, building proprioception, and building practice habits. So when students ask whether the same techniques work for singing, my answer is yes, and singing lets you do even more.
My advice to trans singers is to go bigger and do more. Singing gives you room for sounds that would be a little odd in everyday speech, so use it! If you want to go deeper on singing, my conversation with Eli Conley about singing on testosterone (linked at the bottom of this post) is a great next step.
Understanding Hormone Replacement Therapy (18:01)
This part is for the teachers. If you work with trans students, educate yourself based on each student's needs: their age, their timeline, and whether they're on blockers. Don't make the student educate you. It's also completely okay to tell a student you'll come back to them with information. There's no shame in not knowing all the answers.
And please don't avoid trans students because this feels intimidating. It isn't that complicated to learn, I promise.
Testosterone (whether it's microdosed, a cream, or injections) is the main hormone that changes the voice and calls for adjustments in your teaching. Transfeminine students may take androgen blockers and sometimes estrogen, but estrogen generally has no appreciable effect on the voice.
Students who aren't on hormones usually don't need anything different. Treat them as individuals, like you would anyone. If a student is constantly clearing their throat, that might mean a referral to an SLP or laryngologist, same as it would for any student.
Gender-Affirming Voice Work in Practice (23:57)
These days I mostly teach people with no musical background, which has made my teaching more gestural and less about notes. My courses roughly follow this process:
- Developing awareness. Students audit how they use their voice right now. Everybody has a palette of sounds, and one of those colours might already feel euphoric.
- Listening. Students check whether their ideas about gendered voices come from stereotypes or from reality. How does my mom sound, really?
- Exercises for each characteristic. Pitch range, resonance, vocal weight (lighter or heavier), and contour, emphasis, and inflection.
- Habit formation. Remembering to use the voice, resetting it mid-conversation, and actually finding time to practice.
That last step is a big reason I started the Trans Voice Practice Club, which I sometimes call the run club of trans voice. It's a place to practice and talk without worrying about being questioned mid-conversation.
Students often ask whether their physiology limits what they can achieve. There are limits, but most students are not near their limits. Not even close. I tell students to let the work surprise them, and their goals may shift along the way. A singing teacher wouldn't tell a student they can't sing like Celine Dion. Let's go. Let's try.
Creating Inclusive Learning Spaces (32:34)
Know when to refer out
I started my teacher training for people who want to teach gender-affirming voice, and I was surprised by how many SLPs have taken it. If a student has a pathology outside your scope, refer out, and build relationships with local medical professionals before you need them. (I've definitely texted SLP friends about things I hadn't seen before.)
Singing teachers also shouldn't act as gender therapists, especially with young students who may not be out. Keep a list of affirming trans organizations, online communities, and helplines instead. Broader resources help too, even things like menstrual products in your studio bathroom. Teachers often end up being the one safe person in a student's life.
Ask, don't assume
Your intake form is a great place to start. Ask questions like "How do you want your voice to be referred to?" and "What words make you feel good? What words make you feel bad?" You don't need to master all of trans culture; you need to be curious about what each student needs. I also give students a private way to tell me, after a lesson, if something made them uncomfortable, and I always respond with gratitude.
Language that includes everyone
You can talk about the voice without biological essentialism, which is what my free workshop, Degendering Vocal Anatomy, is all about. For example, a voice is shaped by "a testosterone puberty," whatever the gender of the person who went through it. Use precise language about bodies, like "people who menstruate." In choirs, soprano, alto, tenor, and bass are fine, but don't tie them to "women" and "men," because you never know who in the room is a closeted trans person.
When you make a mistake, be gracious about it. Trans people worry about hurting people's feelings too. I worry about hurting people's feelings!
Teaching Online (37:57)
If you share online resources with students, look into who made them and what the trans community says about them first. Curate your favourites into a list, a PDF, a YouTube playlist, or an Instagram highlight. Noticing the gaps in what's already out there is also a great way to find where your own approach fits.
This is close to my heart right now, because I'm preparing a talk for ASHA called Meeting Clients Where They Learn: Using Digital Tools and Gender-Affirming Voice.
Creating The Trans Voice Practice Journal (39:54)
For a lot of people who aren't singers, practice feels very intangible, very ephemeral. I love practice logs and templates (I even made myself a custom movement journal in Canva), so I wanted one place where you could record which exercises work, which don't, who to call for help, which educators and books are useful, and what to read aloud while you practice.
The journal has written information on gender and voice, setting up a practice space, and choosing exercises, plus a reference section for your favourite warm-ups, exercises for each characteristic, and practice games. The practice logs cover daily or weekly entries, with seasonal check-ins four times a year on your voice and your goals. The practice section was the hardest part to write, because practice looks different for everyone.
I wrote most of it in Sweden! My partner had a research exchange at Uppsala University from October to December, so I pre-filmed three months of YouTube videos and wrote in cafés and libraries, with plenty of fika and bike rides. It was truly a dream.
And you don't have to read it cover to cover. Jump to the sections you need. You can do whatever you want!

Thank you so much to Alexa and the BAST Training team for having me!
If you want to start the work yourself, my self-paced courses are Mindful Voice Feminization, Masculinize Your Voice Without Testosterone, and Mix & Match: Designing Your Nonbinary Voice. My tip: skim the whole course first, then go back to the modules that matter most to you, because there really isn't one order for gender-affirming voice.
And if you're a voice teacher or SLP who wants to learn this work properly, my live teacher training, Learn to Teach Trans Voice Alteration in 5 Weeks, runs once a year. Join the waitlist to hear when the next cohort opens.
