Trans voice beginner? Avoid these mistakes!

If you've just started your trans voice training journey, first of all, welcome! I'm so glad you're here.

And second, I have to tell you something. There are a handful of trans voice training mistakes that almost everyone makes in their first month, and knowing about them in advance can save you a ton of frustration.

As a gender-affirming voice teacher, I see these patterns in new students all the time, including in my courses. So if you've already made any of them, you are not the problem. In this post, I'll walk you through all five and what to do instead, and the video below covers them too.

Mistake #1: Chasing Pitch and Ignoring Resonance

This is probably the most common one, and it makes total sense why people make it! When people think about changing how their voice sounds, the first thing they reach for is pitch: higher or lower. And pitch does matter, don't get me wrong.

But resonance matters just as much. One study that morphed voices to test what listeners use to hear gender found that pitch and resonance have a comparable impact on how a voice is perceived (Journal of Speech, Language, and Hearing Research). And in my experience, resonance is often the one that changes faster.

To put it simply, resonance is the colour of your voice, independent of how high or low it is, and it's controlled by the size of your vocal tract. A small vocal tract sounds brighter and may be perceived by your ear as higher. A large vocal tract sounds darker and may be perceived by your ear as lower, but if you watch your pitch on a tuner while you change your resonance, you'll see the pitch isn't actually moving. You can have a bright resonance at a low pitch, and a dark resonance at a high pitch. Pitch and resonance are two separate things.

What I see a lot in new students is that they're working so hard to raise or lower their pitch that they miss the resonance piece entirely. Then they're like, "I've been practicing for three weeks and I still don't sound right." And often the issue isn't the pitch at all.

So if you're brand new and you don't know where to start: start with resonance. Gender-Affirming Voice 101: Resonance covers the basics, and You Already Have What It Takes to Change Your Voice will show you that you can probably already do this, I promise! And if you have trouble telling pitch and resonance apart, try the Robot Voice Exercise.

Mistake #2: Skipping the Warm-Up Because It Feels Pointless

I know, I know. You want to get to the good stuff, the exercises that actually change your voice. The warm-up feels like eating your veggies or stretching before a run: something you can skip without anything bad happening. (Although you really should do some dynamic stretches before a run, and you really should eat your veggies.)

In trans voice training, just like in all voice training, the warm-up isn't a formality. It's foundational. There are three reasons why.

  • It releases tension. A warm-up before your voice practice helps you release tension in your body, and tension is basically your arch nemesis in voice work. The tighter you are, the harder it is to make subtle adjustments. A good warm-up gives your voice room to move.
  • It builds the habit. Warming up regularly, even without doing any "real" exercises, builds a voice practice habit, and the habit matters so much more than any individual session. I've seen students who barely do any exercises but warm up every day make way more progress than students who do intense hour-long sessions once a week and skip the rest.
  • It gets you used to the weirdness. This one might be a little unexpected. Voice practice is inherently a little silly. You're making sounds you've never made before and paying attention to parts of your body you've never thought about, and it's going to make you a bit self-conscious. The warm-up is a judgment-free zone where you can just exist in that silliness, and the more comfortable you are with it, the better your actual practice goes. To be cringe is to be free!

I have three things that can help you with this one:

Mistake #3: Not Taking Stock of What Your Voice Is Already Capable Of

When people start voice training, there's this assumption: I'm starting from zero. My voice is one thing and I need it to be something else. And that is kind of the whole project! But that framing actually gets in the way, because you're not starting from zero at all.

You already use your voice in wildly different ways every single day. The voice you use on the phone with your mom isn't the same as the voice you use ordering coffee. The voice you use when you're excited isn't the voice you use when you're trying to be calm. You shift your pitch, your resonance, your pace, and your volume all the time, automatically, without thinking.

And if you're lucky, in one of your many voices you may find qualities that inspire you or give you gender euphoria. Those qualities can be a beautiful jumping-off point.

Try It: The Voice Audit

That's why I do something in my courses called a voice audit. It's one of the first exercises in the Developing Awareness lesson, and it goes like this:

  1. Pick a sentence. Something neutral, like "I was just thinking about that."
  2. Say it in as many different ways as you can. Say it like you're talking to your pet, your best friend, your boss, someone you have a crush on, or someone who has wronged you. Say it when you're really tired, or when you're excited.
  3. Notice what changes. What shifts in your pitch? What shifts in the size of your voice, that brightness or darkness? What body sensations change? Do any of these versions give you a little flutter of something?
  4. Write down your notes and keep them to inspire you later. If you come across something you really like, record it quickly on your phone so you can try to recreate it later.

In the video, I run through a few versions of the same sentence so you can hear how much changes.

The goal isn't to find your "final" voice right this second. This is a fact-finding mission to see how much range you already have, and I think most people are pleasantly surprised.

Mistake #4: Not Listening to the Voices Around You

This one is related to the last one, but it's about looking outward instead of inward. A lot of new students dive straight into exercises and completely skip what I think of as the research phase: listening.

Listen to the people around you. Listen to podcasts, shows, video game characters, and YouTube. Listen to your friends. Notice which voices give you gender euphoria. Notice which voices make you feel a little jealous, a little wistful, a little bit like, yes, that, that's what I'm going for. Those feelings are information.

Create a List of Inspiration

This is how you start to create a list of inspiration. (No seriously, do it.) You don't need technical language. Metaphors are great! A voice might sound "warm and melty" or "tight and buzzy" or "sparkly and bright." Just describe what you're hearing in whatever words fit, and if you want a little more structure, my mixing board can help. Over time those descriptions get more specific, and they give you a real target to work towards.

What I see a lot is people trying to do exercises without any clear sense of where they're going. If I ask a new student, "What do you want your voice to sound like?" and they say, "I don't know, more feminine, I guess," that can actually be tough to work with! More feminine than what? Compared to whose voice? What does your version of that sound like? Moving in a feminine direction is a fine place to start, but the more you can learn about your goals and desires, the better. And the same goes for transmasculine and nonbinary folks.

Mistake #5: Focusing on the Product Instead of the Process

Okay, last one, and this is maybe the most important. In your first month of voice training, the goal isn't to have a new voice. I know that might feel frustrating to hear, but bear with me.

In your first month, the goal is to become someone who has a voice practice. That's it. That's the whole thing.

Voice training is a long-term process. It's a bit like learning an instrument: you have to put in consistent time over weeks and months before things really start to click. And if you spend your whole first month listening back to recordings and going, "Am I there yet? Does this sound right? Is this working?" you're going to exhaust yourself, and you'll probably quit.

Voice Training Is a Practical Art

We often come to voice training looking for a solution, a fix, like a math problem where 2 + 2 = 4. And while there is plenty of science behind the mechanisms we use, applying them is unique and personal, and it's much more like an art you develop over time. You wouldn't expect to use oil paints perfectly on your first day of art class, so give yourself the same grace here.

If you focus on showing up, on just doing the practice, even imperfectly, even on days when nothing is clicking, you're building the habit, muscle memory, and control that will eventually produce results.

How Your Voice Shifts Over Time

I love the way speech-language pathologist Tallulah Breslin put this in our interview about voice feminization surgery. They described a spectrum: your low-effort habitual voice, your higher-effort voice, and your goal voice.

"And over time, this low effort and high effort voice shift towards the voice that you want."

Tallulah Breslin, speech-language pathologist

That includes the habitual part. One day you'll catch yourself laughing or talking on the phone on autopilot, and you'll think, oh. That sounded like me.

So if you're in your first month and you're feeling discouraged because you can't hear a difference yet: lower the bar! Make the goal one practice session this week, and then one more next week. The destination will come, but only if you stay on the path.

If you're in that discouraged stretch right now, these posts dig into timelines, motivation, and how much practice is enough:

Conclusion: Avoiding Trans Voice Training Mistakes in Your First Month

So, to recap, the five mistakes everyone makes in their first month of voice training are:

  1. Chasing pitch instead of resonance
  2. Skipping the warm-up because it feels pointless
  3. Not taking stock of what your voice is already capable of
  4. Not listening to the voices around you
  5. Focusing on the product instead of the process

If you're in your first month right now, or even your first week, I hope this gives you a bit of a roadmap. You don't have to do everything perfectly. You just have to start.

And if you want something to keep you company on the path, my book, The Trans Voice Practice Journal, comes out November 19th. It's packed with practice logs and tracking pages, plus prompts for figuring out what you want your voice to sound like and tips for creating a practice habit, so it's a great companion for your first month (and every month after that). Hi, I'm Renée! (they/them)

I'm a queer, nonbinary, and disabled singer, songwriter and gender-affirming voice teacher.

I've been a voice teacher since 2008, I have four full-length albums out, and I have degrees in physics, jazz, and songwriting.

I love creating, I love figuring things out, but most of all, I love helping people.
